UP SHE GOES

Howdy Y'all! (Does this sound like Paula Deen?)

Our last post had us rejoicing over the completion of our slab after roughly 75 days of construction (finally!). Well, not quite complete. (BTW, for those of you in the Northwest, the blue stuff in the picture is called "sun and sky". (-:

During the 3.5 inches of rain that we had a couple of weeks ago, one of the back walls of the detached garage decided to sag outward and took the attached rebar with it. As a result, we made the decision to bypass pouring that garage while the main house slab was being poured last week, and until the foundation crew could rebuild the wall properly. They worked on it this week and completed the second garage pour yesterday, so we are back on track with our concrete friends.

Waiting for concrete.

Completing the detached garage.

To kick things off, we had a small, neighborhood "Slab Party" with some of our close ranch neighbors on Sunday afternoon before the framers arrived on Monday. We are blessed with some great friends on neighboring ranches that are also party hounds at the drop of a hat! No better excuse than to celebrate the first milestone of the building process!

Ranch party animals (L-to-R, Craig, Jerry, Bruce, Cindy, Jan, Melinda, Nancy, Kathy). There will be a test when you come to visit.

Good eats!

On Monday, the framers arrived bearing gifts of half a lumber yard of material and started work on the main house. This represents about 30% of what we're told will be the final lumber package before they are done.

What amazes us is how fast these guys are at building walls! Surprising, as well, is that they don't use bubble levels to align the walls; their only tools are tape measure, square and pencil. (I snuck back the first night with my level to see if the walls were square and I couldn't find any that weren't. Amazing!)

Most of the house is built with 2x6 walls, with the exception of one or two inside walls. We opted for the additional depth based on insulation and roof weight recommendations from the Builder and Engineer.

Check out the high tech method of raising walls.

Here are some different views of their progress this week.

We were visited yesterday by our ranch neighbors Jerry and Cindy Miller, and Cindy's brother Mark, and his wife Michele.

But wait, there's more!

No concrete pour is complete until the obligatory 'hands' are stamped into the slab. With our grandkids visiting, we had a chance to get their fingerprints in as well. (The paw print on the left is Bailey the cat.)

See ya later!
